Gear Up for Grooming

Ever heard the term “horse play”? Well, play they do, and in the process, getting dirty is their delight! Most horse owners, riders, and friends of horses will swear that, once bathed, it is incumbent upon said horse to find the nearest batch of dirt and roll to their heart’s content--which has a lot of dirt gathering potential!

Let’s face it, horses seem to like to be dirty. Some say that when it is hot outside and the flies are buzzing about, horses want to gather mud and dust on their bodies to help fend off the flies. And of course, that itchy back must be scratched and rolling seems to do the trick.

Even in a perfectly cleaned stall, horses gather the bedding in their manes and tails (maybe forelocks), and if there is just one pile of manure in the stall, well, that must be the best spot to lay down!

While I suppose horses like the dirt, we humans do not! So, whether summer, fall, winter or spring, whether at home or away, grooming is the solution, especially when it is not practical to bathe your mount.
Grooming is basically an everyday activity, and actually one that brings pleasure to both horse and you, the groomer. There is a special sense of both accomplishment and plain satisfaction to keeping your horse groomed. And dare I say, it helps to develop a bond between the two of you.

If you are an experienced horse owner or rider, you already know the drill. However, if you are just starting out, or feel a refresher would be helpful, check out this Horse & Country article to gain grooming know how and find a list of the basic tools needed for grooming a horse or pony.
Although some of us don't use a vacuum regularly, the creator of this video, Jessi Lohman, does a great job explaining the steps she takes:
