How to Stay Cool and Stylish in the Saddle: Summer Wardrobe Tips for Hunt Seat Equestrians
Share
As the temperatures rise, it can be challenging for hunt seat equestrians to stay comfortable and stylish in the saddle. But with a few wardrobe adjustments, you can beat the heat and look great while riding. Here are some tips to help you stay cool and fashionable this summer. You’ve got some planning time; since we stored our heavy blankets, we’re sure to have a freezing night before we’re home free with steady warm weather!
Use your layering basics to make the transition.
Chances are you’ve been riding in a baselayer and sweater, vest, or jacket. Now’s the time to tuck in that baselayer and let your other layers go. Check your favorite tack shop’s sales as you might be able to snag some shirts that are perfect for now and next season.
Some of us have been using classic long-sleeved sun shirts as baselayers, and they are perfect to continue wearing. In fact, the versatility of sun shirts makes them a great investment year-round. In our stores, new colors and patterns are arriving daily.
Invest in moisture-wicking clothing.
When it comes to summer riding, choosing the right fabrics is key. One of the best ways to stay cool and comfortable during summer rides is to invest in moisture-wicking clothing. These fabrics are designed to pull sweat away from your skin and allow it to evaporate quickly, keeping you dry and cool.
Ariat’s ClimateTek Cooling, The Tailored Sportsman and IBKUL’s Ice Fil, and RJ Classics 37.5 Technology are all performance fabrics designed to keep riders cool and protect them from the sun. These lightweight, moisture-wicking technical fabrics will help keep you cool and dry, even on the hottest days.
Claiming the use of at least 50% recycled materials, Ariat’s Sun Stopper 2.0 ¼ Zip boasts not only cooling technology but also sun protection of 50+ UPF, odor resistance, and moisture wicking. Along with their long sleeve choices, Ariat has also offered a sleeveless choice with its Hailey model. We also have some new polo patterns that range from whimsical to classic.
While The Tailored Sportsman offers classic style in new colors, IBKUL offers both equestrians and golfers bright colors and fun patterns. The RJ Classics 37.5 technology suggests that the shirt “helps cool you when you’re hot” and “warm you when you’re cold.” You can learn more about their technology at thirtysevenfive.com. We continue to carry a range of RJ styles.
You can also find moisture-wicking socks and undergarments to complete your outfit.
Update your breech collection with fun summer colors.
Both RJ Classics and The Tailored Sportsman have new colors that are perfect for the summer. If you are like our riders, not much will change about your breech choices during the summer heat except perhaps the color. RJ Classics has added Vintage Violet and Dusty Sage while a shipment of Hydrangea, Spa, and Tiffany boot sock breeches from The Tailored Sportsman just arrived this week. We still have a few pairs of Pinky and Sherbert Velcro breeches, too, so perhaps it’s time to invest in that bright color you’ve been wanting.
Replace your winter gloves!
Our new summer gloves come from Roeckl and Heritage. We’ve just placed an order with Samshield, so we’ll soon have their hunter gloves as well.
Don't forget about sun protection for yourself and your horse.
While staying cool and stylish is important, it's also crucial to protect yourself and your horse from the sun's harmful rays. Consider a wide-brimmed helmet to shield your face and apply sunscreen to any exposed skin.
For your horse, consider using a fly sheet with UV protection. Don't forget to provide plenty of shade and water breaks during your ride to keep both you and your horse safe and comfortable.
Don't forget sun screen and fly spray!
